Risk assessment of the use of fireworks at the MCG
Brunton Avenue Richmond VIC 3002 (2022)

In 2022, a half-time fireworks display scheduled for the AFL season opener at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) was called off at the last minute after concerns were raised by authorities over the risk of fire at the Northern Stand.

Dr Enright was engaged by Ashurst acting for the Melbourne Cricket Club. He undertook a risk assessment which found there was no risk of fire spread to the Northern Stand from the theatrical fireworks launched within the stadium grounds or upon the roof of the Shane Warne Stand. The risk assessment concluded, and the authorities accepted, that it was safe to continue to use theatrical fireworks at the MCG.
